The
majority of our horses are from Northern Territory cattle
stations, descendants of Walers,
bred originally for export, military use, and stock work.
These horses were obtained when, running as Brumbies or
feral horses, they were being destroyed as part of the
Tuberculosis (TB) and Brucellosis eradication programme.
We
believe that these horses possess unique attributes as a
result of their original quality blood being subject to
generations of natural selection in harsh and demanding
environmental conditions, which are otherwise impossible
to re-create over such a period of time today. - eg. "common
sense", frugality, stamina, boldness, (strong) conformation;
all of which are pre-requisite attributes for survival under
such conditions and which have been compromised in many
modern breeds in favour of other characteristics such as
"looks" and speed. These inherent attributes make
available the foundation on which to produce useful horses
for practical purposes. Our Walers are NOT a modern day
interpretation of the old breed or type. They are selected
examples of the various types of Walers obtained from the
feral, genetically isolated herds of Brumbies which can
be linked back to traditional horses bred for stock work
or (military) export - without the influence of modern blood. Our
horses are selectively joined to produce purebred and crossbred
Walers. Many of our horses appear in pages Walers
Now and More Walers.
Breeds
other than Walers are also resident here; used for the selective
breeding of Waler cross horses and for lessons and trail
rides.Brumbies are intelligent - watch this one find its
way through a loose fence:
